MSL Mercedes-Benz Cork Fashion Week 2013 got off to a spectacular start last night at the Triskel Christchurch with the Designer of the Year show. The glamorous event saw local milliners & designers showcase exquisitely crafted collections in the hope of winning the ultimate prize of 2013 Designer of the Year. Prizes for the winner included a €7,000 1 Year place on a design course at the LA Creative college of Design in Dublin, a weekend in Paris and a spread in Oohlala Magazine. Previous winners have gone on to set up their own successful design labels.
I was joined by my VIP co-host, TV presenter & Ireland's most Stylish Man, Darren Kennedy. The judging panel included talented Irish Designer Natalie B Coleman, Stylist and fashion blogger Annmarie O'Connor, internationally acclaimed singer Julie Feeney and editor at Oohlala Magazine, Fiona Masterson.
Eileen Healy of 'Oh Designs' won the Millinery award for her very clever and colourful collection of hats inspired by all things sweet. The collection included well crafted hats in the giant shape of a purple wrapped sweet, candy floss inspired pieces and giant marshmallows. Deirdre Collins beat off stiff competition to take away the main Designer Award with her 'Falling Ghaelach' collection inspired by the cloaks worn by women in the 19th century. All judges were confident that Deirdre's skilful collection was deserving of the top prize with spectacular cloaks crafted with a modern sportswear or a couture bodice type cape teamed with trousers to give it a modern day edge.
